Montreal Dominates Midseason PWHL Award Choices

With Montreal playing its 15th game of the season, the last team to do so, and with no more breaks before the World Championship, I thought it was a good timing to put out my version of the mid-season awards.

Billie Jean King MVP Award

Ann-Renee Desbiens (Montreal)

The big difference between the Victoire and the other teams is the number of goals conceded. Even though they only have the third-best offence, they lead the way in goals differential with +14. And the team owes it in large part to its number one goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens. She hasn’t allowed more than two goals in her last nine games, and leads all goalies in every important category. She’s the most valuable player in Montreal this season and because of Montreal’s ranking, which makes her the de facto most valuable player in the PWHL.

Honourable mentions: Hannah Miller, Reneta Fast, Marie-Philip Poulin

Forward of the Year Award

Sarah Fillier

Even though Marie-Philip Poulin leads the league in goals and game-winning goals, and even if Hannah Miller is currently the leading scorer, it’s hard not to give this award to the only player with an average of more than one point per game. Especially when that player is a rookie. Despite Alex Carpenter’s absence, Fillier continues to rack up points.

Honourable mentions: Marie-Philip Poulin, Hannah Miller, Taylor Heise,

Defender of the Year Award

Renata Fast (Toronto)

Fast leads her peers offensively with 16 points in 18 games. She leads all players in the league with a resounding 40 hits. And if it wasn't for Toronto's miserable start this season, she'd have a much better differential. She excels in all aspects of the game.

Honourable mentions: Claire Thompson, Megan Keller, Erin Ambrose

Goaltender of the Year Award

Ann-Renée Desbiens

It's hard not to give this award to Desbiens when she also gets the most valuable player award. She leads in wins, goals-against average and save percentage. She’s been spectacular so far this year.

Honourable mentions: Aerin Frankel, Emerance Maschmeyer, Corrine Schroeder

Rookie of the Year Award

Sarah Fillier

Fillier has been shut out only three times this season and has been in the mix for the top spot on the scoring leader board since day one. With 17 points in 16 games, no other rookie has had that impact on her team.

Honourable mentions: Jennifer Gardiner, Britta Curl-Salemme, Kayle Osborne

Coach of the Year Award:

Kori Cheverie

Her power play is far from the best, but it doesn’t matter. She wins. She knows her player better, how to utilize them more efficiently, and it shows. The fact that the Victoire is the only team over .500, with an eight-point lead, is telling to the success of the team and Cheverie is a huge part of that success.

Honourable mentions: Troy Ryan, Ken Klee, Greg Fargo

Millie Bobby Brown plans to 'shave her hair off' again for major life event
Millie Bobby Brown wants to "shave her hair off" when she has her first baby. The 21-year-old actress - who is getting married to Jon Bon Jovi's son Jake Bongiovi - is keen to raise a family in the future, and she'd love to go back to her 'Stranger Things' look by getting rid of her locks in time for giving birth. She told the 'Call Her Daddy' podcast: "I always tell Jake, for my first baby, I want to shave my hair off. "I don’t know. It was really liberating, would suggest it for anyone. Any girl... Maybe [I would shave it] right before I’m about to give birth because I just think hair is such an ordeal anyway to deal with. "I’m gonna nurture my child. Why deal with my hair? And I think it’s such a liberating experience. "To be a woman is, and I felt like I had that experience as a girl, but I’d like to have that experience as a woman." Millie was just 12 years old when she was cast as Eleven in 'Stranger Things', but she had absolutely no qualms about shaving her head before filming the hit Netflix show. She recalled: "I honestly did not care and I’m saying that like I really did not care. I didn’t have anxiety, I wasn’t sad when they shaved it off. "I just thought, 'Cool. Now this is what I’m doing.' I think it started to hit me months and months in where you get to that age where you’re 11 now and you’re shaving it consecutively every three days because it cannot grow past a certain length because we’re filming, so continuity-wise you’re shaving it, so every time it started to grow and I’d get excited, we’d shave it again." She started to feel "insecure" once she and her friends were getting to the age where boys were getting interested in other girls. She added: "So, I think it became to the point where I was like 12, 11 or 12, where I was like, the boys started liking girls and I was kind of like maybe, 'Why are boys not liking me?' "And then I was like, 'I’m feeling insecure now,' so I would put wigs on and I did get really, really bullied. "In public, people would make comments and stuff but honestly, I still to this day loved the experience and I would do it again."

Dodgers' Roki Sasaki offers glimpse of tantalizing potential in anticipated spring training debut
GLENDALE, Ariz. — It’s not too often a sellout crowd is in attendance to see a pitcher who's not starting, but that was the case Tuesday as the world waited to finally watch Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki make his spring training debut for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Cincinnati Reds. It’s been a slow ramp-up to game action for Sasaki, who signed a minor-league deal with the Dodgers this winter. And after pitching in a simulated game last week, he got his first take of game action under the lights at Camelback Ranch.

Justin Baldoni's lawyer 'surprised by Ryan Reynolds' joke'
Justin Baldoni's lawyer was "surprised" to see Ryan Reynolds joke about his client's ongoing lawsuit. The 48-year-old actor seemingly referenced Justin's legal dispute with Blake Lively, Ryan's wife, during the 'SNL50: The Anniversary Special' over the weekend, and Bryan Freedman, Justin's attorney, has now questioned Ryan's decision to joke about the lawsuit. Appearing on 'Hot Mics with Billy Bush', Bryan said: "I'm unaware of anybody, frankly, whose wife has been sexually harassed and has made jokes about that type of situation. I can't think of anyone who's done anything like that. It surprised me." During the show, Ryan - who was sat among the audience - was asked: "How's it going?" And in response, the Hollywood star replied: "Great, why? What have you heard?" The joke was widely considered to be a reference to Blake's ongoing legal dispute with Justin. The 37-year-old actress has accused Justin, 41, of causing her "severe emotional distress". The movie star - who played Justin's on-screen love interest in 'It Ends with Us' - previously told the New York Times newspaper: "I hope that my legal action helps pull back the curtain on these sinister retaliatory tactics to harm people who speak up about misconduct and helps protect others who may be targeted." Justin - who also directed the 2024 romantic drama film - later denied the allegations, with his lawyer describing the claims as "categorically false". Bryan, who is acting as a lawyer for the actor and his Wayfarer Studios production company, told Variety: "These claims are completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt and rehash a narrative in the media."
