Panthers blow 2-goal third period lead, lose in Boston 3-2

Things were looking great for the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night in Boston, until they weren’t.

The Panthers, who had been playing like a defensive juggernaut lately, blew a 2-0 third period lead and were beaten by the Boston Bruins 3-2 at TD Garden.

The game’s opening goal came directly off a draw in the Bruins zone.

Sam Bennett won the faceoff against Elias Lindholm, drawing the puck back cleanly to the point, where Dmitry Kulikov leaned into a one-timer that beat Jeremy Swayman to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead at the 4:27 mark.

That’s how the score would remain through two periods as both goaltenders, Swayman and Sergei Bobrovsky, continued to come up with save after save.

Florida also continued to dominate while down a man, killing off back-to-back penalties early in the middle frame.

Consecutive undisciplined penalties by Patrick Brown for kneeing Dmitry Kulikov and Nikita Zadorov for roughing Sam Reinhart led to an extended two-man advantage for Florida early in the third, and they would take advantage.

Seth Jones picked up the puck between the circles and slid a pass to Mackie Samoskevich, who one-timed a shot past the blocker of Swayman to double the Panthers lead 4:49 into the third period.

Boston finally got on the scoreboard, and they did it after a tripping call on Seth Jones.

Failed clearing attempts by Eetu Luostarinen and Niko Mikkola led to a long shift in the Panthers’ end, and David Pastrnak found himself all alone on the doorstep, and he made no mistake.

The power play goal snapped Florida’s consecutive penalty kill streak at 21 and cut the Cats lead to 2-1 with more than half the third period remaining.

Then things went from bad to worse for the Cats.

Goals by Mason Lohrei and Pavel Zacha less than three minutes apart gave Boston a sudden and stunning 3-2 lead with 3:17 to go.

A tough loss for Florida, to be sure, but they usually bounce back quickly.

On to Toronto.

QUICK THOUGHTS

Jones’ primary assist on Samoskevich’s goal was his first point since joining the Panthers.

Bennett has a goal and three assists over a three-game point streak, and he’s got eight points in Florida’s past seven games overall.

Kulikov has points in consecutive games for the fourth time this season.

Samoskevich has five goals and six points over his past nine games.

Tracy Morgan taken out of New York Knicks game in wheelchair
Tracy Morgan was taken out of a New York Knicks game in a wheelchair after appearing to fall ill during the game. The 56-year-old comic was sitting courtside at Madison Square Garden on Monday (17.03.25) when, according to photos and footage circulating online, he began vomiting onto the floor. He was then taken out of the arena in a wheelchair holding what appeared to be a red-stained white towel to his face, with one poster on X sharing that he had a nose bleed. The spectator posted alongside a photo: "Tracy Morgan getting wheeled out from courtside at MSG .. bleeding from nose .. could barely stand up … hope he’s ok (sic)" The game - which saw the Knicks beat Miami Heat 116-95 - was delayed for around 10 minutes in the third quarter due to the former '30 Rock' actor's medical incident. A spokesperson for the star has yet to comment on what happened or offer an update on his condition. A Madison Square Garden representative told People magazine: "We hope Tracy feels better soon and look forward to seeing him back courtside." This isn't the first time Tracy - who has diabetes and underwent a kidney transplant in 2010 - has experienced public medical issues. In 2012, he collapsed outside a building at the Sundance Film Festival, with his representative saying it was due to a combination of exhaustion and altitude. Tracy - who returned to work a few days later - posted on social media afterwards: “Superman ran into a little kryptonite. The high altitude in Utah shook up this kid from Brooklyn." And in 2014, he broke his leg and was in a coma for two weeks, later relearning how to walk and talk, after the limo he was riding in was hit from behind by a Walmart truck on the New Jersey Turnpike. Tragically, his friend, fellow passenger James McNair, was killed in the accident. Truck driver Kevin Roper - who hadn't slept for 28 hours when he crashed - later accepted a plea deal to complete 300 hours of community service in order to avoid trial. The former 'Saturday Night Live' star previously expressed his forgiveness towards the driver. He told People magazine on the 10th anniversary of the crash last year: “I want to say to everyone who was in the van with me that night I love you, and we miss you, Uncle Jimmy Mac and God bless your family. "And to the driver that night and his family, me and my comrades forgive you."

These are the Canadian sectors most vulnerable to Trump tariffs, according to Desjardins
A new Desjardins report says there are five sectors of the Canadian economy that are most vulnerable to incoming U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs, with exemptions expected for the energy and automotive sectors. "With Trump set to take office on Jan. 20, Canadian companies are rightly highly concerned. Some should be more worried than others," Desjardins principal economist Florence Jean-Jacobs wrote in a report released on Friday.
